Task Programme September 2017 to January 2018

Please read the Information For Volunteers page before coming along to a task.

Task sites are subject to change as we are sometimes asked to undertake high priority work at short notice. Anyone going straight to the task site should check with the task leader.

  • Sunday 17th September – Bury Wood/North Long Hills
    We will be thinning and removing sapling trees and scrub as part of the HLS wood pasture restoration plan. This is a continuation of the task from 20th August.

  • Sunday 24th September – Gas Ride
    We are returning here to continue with the re-coppicing of scrub as part of Project Nightingale.

  • Sunday 1st October – Woodman’s Glade
    First of three October tasks here to thin young trees, remove holly and halo veterans. Part of the Higher Level Stewardship (HLS) wood pasture scheme, increasing habitat for white admiral, purple emperor and silver-washed fritillary butterflies.

  • Sunday 8th October – Fir & Pond Wood
    Our annual visit to this Herts & Middlesex Wildlife Trust Reserve. Removing rushes from the ponds to increase the area of open water and, for those who prefer to be on dry land, removing small trees from the pasture.

    Removing small birch and scrub, coppicing aspen and willow.

    Continuing a Spring 2016 task, removing various trees and tree lifting to increase light levels and improve water retention in the bog.

    Removing as much crassula as possible from the pond.

  • Sunday 3rd December – Barn Hoppitt
    Thinning saplings as part of the HLS wood pasture restoration plan for this site. New pollards will also be created.

  • Sunday 10th December – Swaines Green
    First of two tasks here, working in Middle Lincoln Field to remove scrub regrowth and continue habitat management.

  • Tuesday 12th December – Furze Ground
    A hugely important lowland heath and reptile-sensitive site. We will be brush cutting bramble, raking off the arisings and removing some birch.
